First: Lapis Lazuli Is a Rock, Not a Single Mineral

The Gemological Institute of America describes lapis lazuli as a rock made from an aggregate of minerals, mainly lazurite, calcite, and pyrite. That mixed composition is one reason genuine lapis does not have one perfectly uniform visual recipe.

That does not mean every very blue bead is genuine, or that genuine lapis must be identical from bead to bead. Dye can intensify color, while natural variations in mineral composition can create different shades and patterns.

Does Pyrite Mean Lapis Is Real?
