Where Do the Twelve Animals Fit In?
The twelve animals are probably the most recognizable part of Tibetan astrology today: Rat, Bull or Ox, Tiger, Hare or Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Bird or Rooster, Dog and Pig.
But the birth-year animal is only one layer. Traditional element calculations combine animal years with elemental relationships and repeating cycles. A Horse year is not treated as identical to every other Horse year: an Iron Horse, Fire Horse, Earth Horse, Water Horse and Wood Horse occupy different positions within the wider cycle.

What Are Mewa and Parkha?
Two additional systems make clear why Tibetan Elemental Astrology cannot be reduced to a birth-year animal.
Mewa is a nine-number cycle used in traditional calculations, while Parkha is an eight-trigram system. Both can be calculated alongside animal-element relationships and may appear in historical Tibetan astrological diagrams.
